Inhabited Bridge
Québec City, Canada
The project significantly transforms the Dorchester Bridge. It reduces the space dedicated to the automobile allowing a large pedestrian continuity between Saint-Roch and Limoilou district. The "inhabited" bridge constitutes a new public space that offers a more visible view on the Saint-Charles River linear park and makes it more accessible. The infrastructure, initially dedicated to transit, becomes a meeting place between the inhabitants of the two neighborhoods.
On the west side of the bridge, a wire mesh structure creates a filter between the vehicles’ space and the pedestrians’ space. A large strip of 11.50 meters is completely dedicated to pedestrians and their activities. A series of microclimatic greenhouses improves the crossing of the Saint-Charles River in any season. This new social space created by the bridge becomes an extension of the linear park.
